Copperline

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a ‘Property’ story here. If you’ve been following Copperline for a while you’ll know that the posts here are design led, whether it’s a house or flat that’s for sale or simply an amazing piece of architecture or a great interior. Turn the clock back a few years, however, when I had a blog called The Property Files, and I did feature properties. They didn’t have to be design led. Instead I was looking for interesting houses; maybe a property that needed refurbishment, but something that stood out as a great opportunity for a buyer.

Which is why this late Georgian house in Edinburgh’s Morningside area caught my eye when I spotted it being marketed by Strutt & Parker. Maybe it’s time to return to the occasional property feature? And 14 Jordan Lane feels like the perfect place to start.

ST ANDREWS BEACH

For those who know me (and therefore know of my love of St Andrews in Scotland), you may be looking at the headline and the photo above and wondering about the whereabouts of this striking house. But no, this isn’t that St Andrews. This St Andrews Beach is located on the Mornington Peninsula to the south of Melbourne in Australia, and this house was designed to make the most of the spectacular views of the rugged coastline here. Just look at this location… incredible, right?

A NEW HOUSE WITH OLD BONES

I came across this house by chance while scrolling Pinterest – the photo below of the fireplace popped up on my feed and I pinned it on my Quiet board, thinking this was an image to explore further. And sure enough, that photo led me to this beautiful house in Belgium designed by the architect Weyne Jurgen with an interior designed by Severine Jaspar.

“We wanted to be in the New Town, and particularly this end of the New Town close to Broughton Street, and we wanted to have a garden for the kids and a bit more space for us,” says Anna Brocklehurst as she recalls her wish-list when property hunting in Edinburgh with husband Richard in the summer of 2013. The couple and their two young sons, Max and Freddie – since joined by 6-week-old Arthur – had been living in a flat in the city’s Bonnington area after moving north from London five years ago. Anna had studied in Edinburgh and also has family here, so she had a good feel for locations.

When I saw this house pop up on my Facebook feed from The Modern House I knew I had to share it. What is it about black timber houses that makes them so appealing? I’m clearly not alone in this fascination: if you search for ‘black timber houses‘ on Dezeen you’ll find a staggering 3,290 results.

This exterior of this three bedroom house just outside the town of Burnham Market in Norfolk has a combination of black-painted timber and brick, and according to the book The New Country Style: England (by Ingrid Rasmussen and Chloe Grimshaw) its striking form was inspired in part by the angular shape of the local Norfolk windmills.

COUNTESS ROAD

As someone who lives in the city centre, I’m always fascinated by houses that have been designed to fit awkward or tight urban sites. Some of my favourite houses over the years have fallen into this category as the architects involved have had to come up with ingenious ways of working with the available space while also navigating challenges such as overlooking issues. So you can understand why this house on Countess Road in London’s Kentish Town caught my eye. Built in 1975 on the end of a Victorian terrace, this house is so tucked away from the street that you might never know it was here.
