TIMBER LAYERS

18th June 2018

It’s been ages since I last posted, and it’s good to be back. A lot has happened in the last few months months, from shoulder-healing yoga (still a work in progress) to moving and swapping our top floor flat in Edinburgh for ground floor living just outside the city. This has been such a long process, and emotional – even more so than I expected. I’d been in our last flat for 13 years and living in the area for 23 years, so it really was a wrench to go. But hopefully the new place will start to feel like home in time too. Even though I’ve been a city person for most of my life, maybe life will be better without the background buzz that comes with city living. And, yes, there’s a project to do! Watch this space…

And after this break, there’s so much to blog about, so I’m going to dive right in with a house I spotted on Fantastic Frank.

STATEMENT STONE

8th December 2017

When I was choosing some new kitchen worktops a few years ago I went to visit a stone supplier outside Edinburgh to have a look at different granite finishes, and I remember being amazed when seeing all the giant slabs of stone on display. It’s one thing looking at small samples of stone in a showroom but quite another seeing unfinished stone slabs in a yard. So I can only imagine how impressive it would be to see these incredible stone finishes if visiting stone specialist Gerald Culliford‘s yard at Kingston Upon Thames.

LUNDHS

22nd February 2017

Given my addiction to all things Scandi, it’s perhaps no surprise that these images from the Norwegian stone specialists Lundhs caught my eye. When I was choosing a new worktop for my own kitchen a few years back, my default mode was to opt for natural stone. (I should explain, while I rent, I’m really fortunate to have a landlord who understands that a tenant who looks at interiors for a living is a good person to get involved when considering any home improvements!) We considered granite in various colourways, but in the end I realised that I really didn’t want a high gloss finish. I wanted something matte, something quiet. I opted for this Silestone and it’s beautiful, but had I come across Lundhs Real Stone worktops, and specifically their silk matte finish stone, well, my kitchen might have looked a little different today.

OAK KNOLL RESIDENCE

6th January 2016

I wanted to start 2016 on a gentle note. I have so many great properties to share, but I haven’t written anything for a few weeks so I wanted to ease the brain back into gear with a house I spotted at the end of last year when I was scrolling around for inspiration. Oak Knoll Residence grabbed me from the first photo. Viewing this house from the depths of a British winter, it just says light, spring, warmer days and easy indoor-outdoor living. This felt like the perfect house to kick off 2016.

HOUSE OF BRICKS

7th January 2015

I can’t resist exposed brickwork, so it’s easy to see why this new house in Melbourne caught my eye when it was featured on HomeDSGN. House of Bricks was designed by the Melbourne based studio Jolson who describe the building as a “contemporary re-interpretation of warehouse living. Continue Reading…

JOSEPH DIRAND

16th April 2014

When I came across this video interview with Parisian architect Joseph Dirand via Twitter, I can honestly say that watching Dirand discuss his beautiful home in Paris stopped me in my tracks. I already knew of Dirand’s work – I’ve posted about another glorious elegant project of his – but still, his own home is just exquisite in its refined aesthetic and gorgeous, gorgeous use of materials.
