ABERCROMBY PLACE

24th March 2016

“We wanted to be in the New Town, and particularly this end of the New Town close to Broughton Street, and we wanted to have a garden for the kids and a bit more space for us,” says Anna Brocklehurst as she recalls her wish-list when property hunting in Edinburgh with husband Richard in the summer of 2013. The couple and their two young sons, Max and Freddie – since joined by 6-week-old Arthur – had been living in a flat in the city’s Bonnington area after moving north from London five years ago. Anna had studied in Edinburgh and also has family here, so she had a good feel for locations.

CLARENDON CRESCENT

22nd February 2016

When the estate agent Simpson & Marwick sent me the link to Square Foot Media‘s photography of this Edinburgh apartment, I knew that I wanted to feature this property as soon as I opened the photos of the garden room extension. Situated at the rear of this ground and garden level flat in Clarendon Crescent in the city’s West End, the rest of the property is also impressive – particularly when considering the drawing room on the ground level with its handsome Georgian features or the scale of the master bedroom.

DUNCAN STREET

2nd February 2016

When interior designer Eva Serrano arrived at this handsome Georgian townhouse at 9 Duncan Street in Edinburgh’s Newington area 12 years ago, she was looking for a home that could evolve with her growing family – daughter Naroa and son Lewis – and that would give her the opportunity for a studio space at home. As she says: “The house has five bedrooms, so I could have a studio here and this gave me the work-life balance I wanted.”

CARLTON STREET

3rd November 2015

The first time I visited this ground and garden level property at 4 Carlton Street in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge area was back in 2010, when I was writing about the interior for Scotland on Sunday. I loved both the property itself – this is one of my favourite streets in Edinburgh – and the interior styling that combined subtle French with Scandinavian influences.

Yet when I went back to see this property, which is now on the market with Knight Frank, I didn’t realise it was the same place. Nothing felt familiar. Then, as I was chatting to owner Christine Maclachlan, the penny dropped. This was the same place, only transformed to create another very different but also stunning interior.  “The previous owner had done the house beautifully,” Christine agrees. “We loved the house when we bought it, but the existing layout wasn’t ideal for a family of four.”

THE SCHOOL HOUSE

6th October 2015

Having grown up in San Francisco, art director and visual designer Shilla Mehrafshani of Azar Design has always been used to social, open plan living spaces, so when she was property hunting in Edinburgh back in 2010 she had a clear idea of what she wanted from her home. Shilla acknowledges that she was challenged by the insular layouts she was encountering in properties, particularly those with separate kitchens.

HAWTHORN VILLA

10th September 2014

Kirsten Dunlop initially spotted Hawthorn Villa by chance while viewing a neighbouring house. “When I saw this place, I said, ‘I really like that property,’” she recalls. Hawthorn Villa is located off Ferry Road in Edinburgh’s Trinity area, but while Ferry Road is a busy thoroughfare, this property is actually tucked along a private lane, and is set well way back from the road itself.  “When you’re out in the back garden, you really could be in the country, and the rooms at the front of the house look out onto trees,” Kirsten says. “It’s really calm.” Continue Reading…
