FIFTH AVENUE

19th January 2017

For every incredible house I come across, I’m always just as inspired when I encounter a smaller property that’s been really well thought out and designed. Indeed, living in the city means I tend to gravitate towards smaller properties – the quirky flats and fantastic mews buildings that have clever spatial design. When you look at more compact properties, so often there’s a poky internal kitchen or an even smaller and gloomy internal bathroom (my pet hate), or the flow of space is just a bit… odd.

Which brings me to this garden flat in London’s Kensal Rise – a one bedroom property where every inch of space has been considered and packed with great styling, and where the layout has been reworked to create a flow of space from the entrance right through to the rear garden.

MICHELA BERTOLINI

12th January 2017

Back in November I shared the first in a new series of blog posts with photographer Nathalie Priem, and I’m delighted to be sharing another – and another London home, this time in Stockwell, which was redesigned by architect Michela Bertolini. This property has evolved over the years as parts of the house were initially rented, and the owners have been working with Michela to reconfigure the spaces.

Michela Bertolini Design Studio describes the ethos of her practice as “timeless simplicity, combined with an attention to precise construction detailing. We are drawn to textures and materials, to natural light and the emotional link that forms between people and places.” I caught up with Michela towards the end of year to ask a few questions about this project, and how that timeless simplicity is reflected in this beautifully redesigned ground and garden apartment.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

24th December 2016

I must admit, Christmas has crept up on me this year. I was in denial, more or less, until last week, when it hit me that I really needed to start planning – for Harris if not myself! The build-up to Christmas can feel too much – too much pressure, too many adverts. Just too much. It hardly fits with my less is more approach!

And then, as I was looking through Christmas images I came across the beautiful photo above of the Byrne Table Planter from Rowen & Wren and realised that this kind of Christmas styling was right up my street. I’m going to recreate this look for our dinner table tomorrow as I already have a very similar planter waiting to be dug out and filled with fir branches and candles. So I thought I’d round up a few photos as inspiration for (yes, tomorrow’s!) festive styling.

BLUE MOOD

22nd December 2016

I’ve really missed Copperline over the last few weeks as I had to take a break for work – though the work/blog balance is usually in sync, tight pre-Christmas deadlines left me with literally no head space to write here. So that’s done, and it’s good to be back.

While I’ve lots of blog posts planned to catch up on (brace yourselves in the New Year!), I couldn’t resist easing back into blog mode with a #ScandiHouseLust post. I’ve been watching the Swedish TV drama Modus (pretty much the perfect TV for a winter’s night – you can catch it all on iPlayer) and, taut storyline aside, there are also a couple of great houses to drool over. One is the home of the lead character, criminal psychologist Inger Johanne Vik – think open plan living with a blue-toned colour palette against brick, and with the occasional warm gingery accent. Inspired by that blue palette, I headed to Entrance Makleri – always a good place to find a stylish interior – in search of some mellow hues.

GEORGIAN RENOVATION

15th November 2016

I’ve said it before and I’ll no doubt say this many times again, but some properties just grab you with one single space – that one room that connects with your taste or feels inspiring in some way. And so it was when I first opened the photos by SquareFoot of this property in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge area and saw the kitchen and dining space. I love an eclectic mix in a kitchen, and this room has so much personality and character, from the Georgian flagstone floor scattered with rugs to the entire art wall in the dining area, to the unexpected contrast of the Chinese Peony wallpaper from Sanderson against the industrial-styled black extractor.
