CRAIGDENE

25th February 2016

I’m aware that I often write about houses that I could imagine living in, and as I was thinking about this house, Craigdene, I realised that I had to write it again: here is a house that I could definitely imagine as my home. Yes, with some houses, that’s a dream – I’m writing about an incredible property that’s far outside my budget of possibility (short of a lottery win, that is). We all love looking at those dream houses, but it’s also great to discover a property that not only looks interesting, with an interior that’s filled with style and personality, but is also realistic. Achievable.

CLARENDON CRESCENT

22nd February 2016

When the estate agent Simpson & Marwick sent me the link to Square Foot Media‘s photography of this Edinburgh apartment, I knew that I wanted to feature this property as soon as I opened the photos of the garden room extension. Situated at the rear of this ground and garden level flat in Clarendon Crescent in the city’s West End, the rest of the property is also impressive – particularly when considering the drawing room on the ground level with its handsome Georgian features or the scale of the master bedroom.

PARK HOUSE

17th February 2016

Some houses really are a revelation. Either they look like one thing from the exterior only to reveal an entirely different style once inside, or they’ve undergone such a transformation that the ‘before’ and ‘after’ comparison is unbelievable.

Park House falls into the latter category. When Ewen and Lottie Brown saw this property for sale after relocating from London to Scotland six years ago, it was a pretty unappealing 1970s house. The couple had moved north with the dream of living in the countryside and embracing a rural lifestyle. The Browns, who now have three children, Holly, Ronnie and Frank, initially rented a house in Haddington in East Lothian while looking for a place to buy, and soon realized how much they enjoyed living in the town.

DUNCAN STREET

2nd February 2016

When interior designer Eva Serrano arrived at this handsome Georgian townhouse at 9 Duncan Street in Edinburgh’s Newington area 12 years ago, she was looking for a home that could evolve with her growing family – daughter Naroa and son Lewis – and that would give her the opportunity for a studio space at home. As she says: “The house has five bedrooms, so I could have a studio here and this gave me the work-life balance I wanted.”

ALDERSGATE STREET

14th January 2016

I wanted to start this year – in terms of properties that are on the market – with something truly knockout, and I figured that an apartment that (in my mind anyway) looks like Bond’s London pad pretty much fits the bill. This staggering apartment – staggering in scale and style – is currently on the market with The Modern House and is located on Aldersgate Street within the Barbican Estate in London. Described by the selling agent as “one of the most extraordinary living spaces on the Barbican Estate”, this property occupies the former Estate Office, which was once used to sell other apartments on the Estate and which then stood empty for ten years before being purchased by its current owners.

THE DUNCAN HOUSE

10th December 2015

“I’d never been to Scotland; I’d always wanted to visit but had never done it,” says Ian Lillicrap as he reflects on the chance find that led him to buy a home here in 2008. “One Friday I was reading through a newspaper property section and I saw a photo of this house, of the main south elevation, and thought, ‘I love the architecture of that! Where is it?'”

The Duncan House is one of those properties that makes you stop and look. There’s the striking architecture with the extensive use of glass and the dramatic sweeping roofline; the giant boulders integrated within the external landscaping as you approach; the contemporary interior style with its beautifully crafted timber detailing; and the setting within a historic walled garden – any of these elements might make you stop, but put them all together and you have a very distinctive and unique home.
