RICHMOND RESIDENCE

7th June 2016

I first came across the Australian Interior Design Awards a few years ago, doubtless scrolling for inspiration online, and I’m pretty sure that Vogue Living was the source of that initial encounter. Covering categories from retail and workplace design to hospitality, the residential design and residential decoration shortlists are always the must-see categories for me as both showcase some of the most exciting domestic architectural and interior projects in Australia.

This year’s winners will be announced later this week on June 10, and I couldn’t resist sharing a few photos from one of the projects listed in the residential decoration category: the Richmond Residence designed by We Are Huntly, with gorgeous photography by Brooke Holm.

DRIFTWOOD

19th May 2016

I must admit, super-contemporary bathroom designs are not really my thing. I admire them on Pinterest and Instagram, and I see some beautifully designed contemporary bathrooms in the flesh – bathrooms that make me look at my own tired version and long for a redesign.

But fundamentally, I’m always drawn to a mix of elements and to natural materials, whatever the space, and the same is true in bathroom design. I like traditional tongue-and-groove wall panelling and painted walls rather than full-height tiling. I like minimal freestanding baths but I also like traditional high-level cisterns. And as for materials, one of my favourite bathrooms of late was an iroko-clad space in a house in Haddington.

HEREFORD ROAD

13th April 2016

I’ve just been writing about a flat in Edinburgh where the owners have built up a diverse collection of artworks and also have a passion for books – the walls are literally filled with the things they love – and this reminded me that when you’re looking at properties, it’s the homes with personality that always catch your eye. Yes, sometimes it’s about the dramatic volume of a space, or the beauty of the architecture, but sometimes you’re drawn to the pieces; the artworks and collections of objects that make this one interior, this one property, stand out from everything else you’ve seen.

DEE HARDWICKE FOR HARVEY MARIA

5th April 2016

“We think floors should be celebrated, adorned and given the same status as the walls and furnishings,” Harvey Maria writes on their website, and I must admit, after looking through the company’s latest collections, I can only agree. While my default mode has always been for simple timber flooring – unless we’re talking about historic floor tiles, like the Victorian encaustic tiles I admire in properties around Edinburgh – I was hooked on Harvey Maria’s patterned vinyl flooring the moment I laid eyes on Neisha Crosland’s award-winning Parquet floor tiles. Here was a floorcovering that I couldn’t definitely imagine having at home – warm underfoot, hardwearing enough for small paws, and stylish.

The company has collaborated with some of Britain’s best-loved designers, and 2016 sees the launch of the latest range created for Harvey Maria by the designer Dee Hardwicke.

THE DUNCAN HOUSE

10th December 2015

“I’d never been to Scotland; I’d always wanted to visit but had never done it,” says Ian Lillicrap as he reflects on the chance find that led him to buy a home here in 2008. “One Friday I was reading through a newspaper property section and I saw a photo of this house, of the main south elevation, and thought, ‘I love the architecture of that! Where is it?'”

The Duncan House is one of those properties that makes you stop and look. There’s the striking architecture with the extensive use of glass and the dramatic sweeping roofline; the giant boulders integrated within the external landscaping as you approach; the contemporary interior style with its beautifully crafted timber detailing; and the setting within a historic walled garden – any of these elements might make you stop, but put them all together and you have a very distinctive and unique home.

SUCH & SUCH

18th November 2015

You know when you’re looking around online for something, perhaps a gift for someone, only instead you find yourself sidetracked by an entire website of things you’d really like for yourself? That was my introduction to Such & Such – an online design retailer that presents a beautifully collated array of homewares, lighting, accessories and furniture. (I’m pretty sure I landed on this site looking at bags for my Other Half, and then strayed onto the gorgeously understated tableware and textiles!)

But Such & Such is more than a shop as you can also learn about the designers and makers whose work is featured and sold here, and read their stories and discover their inspiration. And you get to find out what makes Such & Such co-founders and siblings Nikki Sanders and Alastair Matthews tick, from their Saturdays & Sundays Journal to their musical S & S Playlists that you can follow on Spotify. Until December 6, Such & Such also has a Pop Up at Seven Dials in London.
