DOWSING & REYNOLDS

22nd March 2019

I’ve been an admirer of Dowsing & Reynolds for some time – we’ve used their matt black switches and sockets at home, and their Trikonasana pendant light hangs in my yoga space, glowing with their beautiful squirrel cage filament bulbs. (And could there be a better-named light for a yoga space!) Deciding to use matt black for the hardware also fitted in with a wider aesthetic: when redesigning the kitchen and shower room – a long term plan once the budget allows – I’m planning to use black taps in both, and a black shower. All with a lovely matt finish, of course, as looks aside, that tactile quality makes these everyday pieces a real pleasure to use.

NERO MARQUINA

17th August 2017

I realise it’s still summer, and I probably should still be thinking about summer light and summer palettes, but I feel like I’m being drawn to the dark side at the moment. I’ve been helping my Mum with her new kitchen and bathroom redesign, and it’s all dark: riven slate-effect cladding on the bathroom walls and off-black kitchen cabinetry. Even the appliances are black, as is the kitchen tap. I think my head has been so full of this colour palette that I’m being drawn to certain finishes as a result.

Which brings me to this gorgeous Nero Marquina collection of tiles from Original Style – a matt-finish porcelain that looks like marble.

BRIDGE STREET

11th March 2014

I’ll admit, black wouldn’t be the first colour I’d choose when designing a kitchen. This isn’t to say that I can’t appreciate black kitchens – I even wrote a post on the subject on Copperline on Tumblr, where I swooned over a variety of sleek designs. My first choice would be a chalky grey hue, but every so often a black kitchen crops up on Pinterest or Tumblr, or on another blog, and it stops me in my tracks. Continue Reading…

KARRI LOOP HOUSE

22nd February 2014

Located just south of Perth in the town of Margaret River in Western Australia, Karri Loop House is a wonderful example of a building that’s been designed and constructed in harmony with its setting. And I mean that literally as this house was built around three existing trees. The building was designed by MORQ and has an H-shaped plan that wraps around the tree trunks while framing a pair of courtyards. Continue Reading…

FOUR-CORNERED VILLA

20th December 2013

A few weeks ago I featured a minimal black and white timber house on Copperline: crisp white inside, warmed by the furnishings in black, dark grey and natural wood, and with black painted pine cladding on the exterior. I didn’t think I’d find something else where this monochromatic palette was used to achieve an even more streamlined and pared back effect, but this house in Virrat in Finland really is, simply, black and white. BLACK AND WHITE

19th November 2013

Admittedly, the interior of this home might not be for everyone – after all, it’s so white and minimal and pristine. Could I imagine living in a space like this all the time? Probably not – I’m not that neat – but I can imagine escaping to this light-drenched home that manages to appear both energizing and yet wonderfully serene. Continue Reading…
