Copperline

ROYAL PARK TERRACE

Years ago, I wrote about two projects on Royal Park Terrace in Edinburgh – numbers 40 and 42. Both properties had previously been shops and were converted in 2002/3 to residential use by Zone Architects. Architect David Jamieson worked closely with both owners to create bespoke living spaces. Number 42 was a home and studio for a photographer, while number 40 was converted into a home. I remember arriving at number 42, entering across the walkway that led inside from the front door, where the owner had parked his motorbike, and realising that this was going to be a very distinctive home indeed.

In terms of the spaces and volume, number 40 was no less unique. And thirteen years after that first visit – and no, I can’t believe it’s been that long! – this property at 40 Royal Park Terrace is now on the market with Coulters.

BERESFORD TERRACE

I first spotted this unique home on the Instagram feed from The Modern House – and even if you’re not looking for a property, this gallery is so inspiring in terms of the architecture and design featured. The first image I saw was the photo below, and I thought, ‘What is this place?’ as I was drawn to the eclectic styling and the patina of the chimney breast with its open fireplace. And that photo led me to this listing from The Modern House.

NEW RUSTIC

Sometimes one blog post leads organically to the next, and so this recent post on La Granja Ibiza brought me to this house in Gotland in Sweden, which is currently on the market with Fantastic Frank. When we were on holiday in Northumberland back in September, we stayed in an old steading conversion with vaulted ceilings and chunky original roof beams, and with some exposed stone walls and brick detailing, and it made me realise how much I love this rustic style. For me, this look works best when the rustic elements are combined with simple, pared back furnishings, and with a few crisp and contemporary touches – I have a ‘New Rustic‘ Pinterest board dedicated to this look.

Which brings me back to this recently renovated period home in Gotland – a house that exemplifies this aesthetic.

A CRAFTED HOME

Many of my favourite period houses that I’ve seen over the years – especially those in urban locations – have featured extensions, usually to create new dining-kitchen spaces, and the reasons behind these projects have been similar: the existing kitchens were too small for modern living and often too gloomy, and many of these period homes had a poor connection with the external spaces. When you live in the city and have a garden, you want to enjoy it; you want that fluid indoor-outdoors connection.

And, of course, it’s not only about creating the nice big dining-kitchen: it’s about the whole flow of space internally. It’s about creating family orientated living zones and entertaining spaces. And this elegant three bedroom Victorian house in London’s Dartmouth Park, which is being marketed by The Modern House, ticks all these boxes.

HOUSE FOR A PAINTER

Years ago, I visited an incredible property called Sea Loft in the Fife coastal town of Kinghorn. Sea Loft was the home and studio of artists Robert Callender and Elizabeth Ogilvie, who created the space by converting a previously derelict cinema. The volume and the natural light thundering into the all-white studio was incredible, and no less so in the couple’s living area with its sea views. It was a wonderful example of a living space and studio that worked together, cohesive in design and approach, to create an unforgettable home.

And this London house, House for a Painter, although very different in location, shares that same unique quality and the wonderful sense of light and volume. Whereas Sea Loft was about views outside to the landscape, this house offers long views between the studio and living zones, an “internal landscape,” as architect Dingle Price refers to it, where one area flows into the next.

BONNYTOUN HOUSE

When I was thinking about starting a weekly Scottish Property of the Week here on Copperline, I came across this house – make that this staggering house – on the market with Knight Frank. And I realised that there’s no better time to kickstart a new weekly feature than with a beautifully refurbished B listed Victorian country house.

Located in Linlithgow in West Lothian, Bonnytoun House stands in mature parkland with around 24 acres of land including paddocks and two walled gardens, along with an old stable courtyard. With views over Linlithgow Loch towards the historic Linlithgow Palace, Bonnytoun is one of those properties that feels very ‘away from it all’, yet it’s also in a prime commuter spot with easy access to Edinburgh and Glasgow.
