COLOUR CRUSH

30th November 2017

I can sometimes feel uneasy when writing about colour – other than grey! – possibly because the list of colours that I wouldn’t personally use at home is considerably longer than the list of hues I would. Anything pink, blue (except navy), red… indeed anything bright, if I’m being honest. Other than a really rich orange, which is my exception to the rule. I gravitate towards texture rather than colour.

But it’s good to be challenged on this when you come across an interior where colour has been used really well. Take this midcentury home that showcases Benjamin Moore’s 2018 Colour of the Year, Caliente, a vibrant red that’s been described by Benjamin Moore’s Director of Strategic Design Intelligence Ellen O’Neill as “strong, radiant and full of energy.”

TWENTIETH CENTURY ANTIQUES

5th July 2017

I’ve been a great admirer of Twentieth Century Antiques for many years. Established in 1993 by Andrew Fletcher, Twentieth Century Antiques specialises in modernism, midcentury and postwar design – exactly the kind of pieces I lust after, basically. I first met Andrew when I was writing about a Georgian flat he had refurbished in Edinburgh – his own home – that was filled with the most beautiful pieces of midcentury furniture. Then in 2014 I interviewed Andrew and his partner Rachel Green about their home in Edinburgh’s West End – Magdala Mews remains one of my favourite houses on the blog.

FIFTH AVENUE

19th January 2017

For every incredible house I come across, I’m always just as inspired when I encounter a smaller property that’s been really well thought out and designed. Indeed, living in the city means I tend to gravitate towards smaller properties – the quirky flats and fantastic mews buildings that have clever spatial design. When you look at more compact properties, so often there’s a poky internal kitchen or an even smaller and gloomy internal bathroom (my pet hate), or the flow of space is just a bit… odd.

Which brings me to this garden flat in London’s Kensal Rise – a one bedroom property where every inch of space has been considered and packed with great styling, and where the layout has been reworked to create a flow of space from the entrance right through to the rear garden.

VIVA BY SARAH CAMPBELL

20th October 2016

Sometimes a nicely styled image draws you to a product – never underestimate the importance of well-styled product shots! – and so these photos from Magpie caught my eye. This is where I need to raise my hand and say how much I like this company’s ethos. Magpie is a British homewares company with a wide range of products from ceramics and textiles to prints, and as they say on their website, Magpie’s love of nature extends to their methods of manufacture.

LANGHAM HOUSE CLOSE

21st October 2015

Those of you who have been following Copperline for a while – since back in The Property Files days – may be looking at these photos and thinking that this apartment feels familiar. And you’d be right as I’ve featured properties at Langham House Close not once but twice before – here and here. Both were on the market with The Modern House, as is this two bedroom ground floor apartment. So why this development, you might be asking? What’s so good about Langham House Close?

COURTYARD HOUSE

18th August 2015

I first spotted this house a while back on Pinterest as the photo below kept popping up on my feed, and while I loved the style of this space I had no idea what the rest of the house looked like – until recently, that is, when Courtyard House was featured on HomeDSGN and I discovered that this striking living space is part of a renovated and redesigned midcentury house.

Courtyard House is located in the Berlin neighbourhood of Hansaviertel and was redesigned in 2012 by bfs d. The house is one of five courtyard properties that were built by architect Eduard Ludwig for the International Building Exhibition INTERBAU 1957.
