I have a confession to make, and I can’t quite believe that I’m writing this but…. I’ve never been a big fan of house plants. Okay, before you throw your hands up in horror, I’m blaming my childhood for this (of course). Growing up, our home was filled with plants. We had macrame hanging baskets with plants. Spider plants everywhere. And mother-in-law’s tongues looking spiky and defiant alongside the fireplace. I grew up surrounded by plants, and rather than making me appreciate and enjoy all this natural greenery, as soon as I had my own place I made sure that it was a plant-free zone. Too busy, too leafy, too spiky, too green. There was no space in my home for plants.

DOWSING & REYNOLDS

I’ve been an admirer of Dowsing & Reynolds for some time – we’ve used their matt black switches and sockets at home, and their Trikonasana pendant light hangs in my yoga space, glowing with their beautiful squirrel cage filament bulbs. (And could there be a better-named light for a yoga space!) Deciding to use matt black for the hardware also fitted in with a wider aesthetic: when redesigning the kitchen and shower room – a long term plan once the budget allows – I’m planning to use black taps in both, and a black shower. All with a lovely matt finish, of course, as looks aside, that tactile quality makes these everyday pieces a real pleasure to use.

HIGHBURY HILL EXTENSION

I’ve featured Havwoods on Copperline before in this beautiful London apartment from 2016, and I wrote at the time: ‘Every so often an email lands in my inbox and I realise its contents have to be featured…’ and this is another one of those moments. This stunning space features flooring by Havwoods – Block Herringbone Engineered Oak Flooring to be specific, and the warm golden tones of this finish are the perfect backdrop to the black accents and brick textures in this kitchen and dining space in London’s Highbury Hill.

THE LARKHALL KITCHEN BY deVOL

Every so often you come across a project that just connects. Aesthetically, it’s exactly your style. And, for me, this is one of those projects. I’ve been an admirer of The Sebastian Cox Kitchen by deVOL since I first laid eyes on it. This design sums up everything I love: craftsmanship, as each cabinet is beautifully handmade using British grown timbers; texture, as the design features a combination of sawn and woven timbers for an approach that’s both rustic and modern; and a subtle colour palette that draws out the beauty of the wood.

As Sebastian Cox has said of this collection and his collaboration with deVOL: “The whole kitchen is designed to look like it breathes. Together we’ve created something that feels clean, simple and light but is brimming with subtle texture to keep the choice of material front of mind.”

NERO MARQUINA

I realise it’s still summer, and I probably should still be thinking about summer light and summer palettes, but I feel like I’m being drawn to the dark side at the moment. I’ve been helping my Mum with her new kitchen and bathroom redesign, and it’s all dark: riven slate-effect cladding on the bathroom walls and off-black kitchen cabinetry. Even the appliances are black, as is the kitchen tap. I think my head has been so full of this colour palette that I’m being drawn to certain finishes as a result.

Which brings me to this gorgeous Nero Marquina collection of tiles from Original Style – a matt-finish porcelain that looks like marble.

LUNDHS

Given my addiction to all things Scandi, it’s perhaps no surprise that these images from the Norwegian stone specialists Lundhs caught my eye. When I was choosing a new worktop for my own kitchen a few years back, my default mode was to opt for natural stone. (I should explain, while I rent, I’m really fortunate to have a landlord who understands that a tenant who looks at interiors for a living is a good person to get involved when considering any home improvements!) We considered granite in various colourways, but in the end I realised that I really didn’t want a high gloss finish. I wanted something matte, something quiet. I opted for this Silestone and it’s beautiful, but had I come across Lundhs Real Stone worktops, and specifically their silk matte finish stone, well, my kitchen might have looked a little different today.
