CURIOUS EGG

2nd February 2017

You know when you happen across a website, start browsing, and half an hour later you’re still there, hooked, clicking through categories and making mental lists of things you’d like? Curious Egg is one of those sites as this online store is literally filled with unique objects from accessories, textiles and lighting to (incredible!) wallpapers and artworks.

Curious Egg was launched in 2015 by artist Lorraine Aaron and her husband Roddy, who live in Perth in Scotland – I have to admit this Scottish connection also caught my eye. Lorraine has worked as a sculptor, painter, public artist and gallery artist, and has also taught contemporary arts practice and run a successful art consultancy business. Intrigued by how this experience led her to launch Curious Egg and informs her selection of pieces and artists, designers and craftspeople, I caught up with Lorraine to ask about her background and her business.

VIVA BY SARAH CAMPBELL

20th October 2016

Sometimes a nicely styled image draws you to a product – never underestimate the importance of well-styled product shots! – and so these photos from Magpie caught my eye. This is where I need to raise my hand and say how much I like this company’s ethos. Magpie is a British homewares company with a wide range of products from ceramics and textiles to prints, and as they say on their website, Magpie’s love of nature extends to their methods of manufacture.

SUCH & SUCH

18th November 2015

You know when you’re looking around online for something, perhaps a gift for someone, only instead you find yourself sidetracked by an entire website of things you’d really like for yourself? That was my introduction to Such & Such – an online design retailer that presents a beautifully collated array of homewares, lighting, accessories and furniture. (I’m pretty sure I landed on this site looking at bags for my Other Half, and then strayed onto the gorgeously understated tableware and textiles!)

But Such & Such is more than a shop as you can also learn about the designers and makers whose work is featured and sold here, and read their stories and discover their inspiration. And you get to find out what makes Such & Such co-founders and siblings Nikki Sanders and Alastair Matthews tick, from their Saturdays & Sundays Journal to their musical S & S Playlists that you can follow on Spotify. Until December 6, Such & Such also has a Pop Up at Seven Dials in London.

IN CONVERSATION WITH HEATHER SHIELDS

23rd September 2015

Having a love of textiles is very much my default setting, and particularly, I’ve realised, when it comes to woven textiles, so I was intrigued when woven textile designer Heather Shields got in touch to introduce her latest collection of contemporary cushions and blankets called PLAY. I instantly connected to Heather’s striking geometric designs and punchy colour palette, and, aesthetics aside, I also admire her commitment to supporting her fellow British manufacturers and suppliers.

Heather launched her own business in June 2014, and was selected to take part in the Craft Council’s Hothouse programme for emerging makers in December that year. Based on the west coast of Scotland, Heather designs her cloth using a traditional dobby loom, handweaving samples with carefully selected yarns using a bold colour palette.

SEVEN GAUGE STUDIOS

12th January 2014

If you’ve been following Copperline over the last few months then you may have seen my earlier In Conversation post when I chatted with textile designer Joy Bates of Seven Gauge Studios about her journey to launching her business in 2010, and the inspiration behind her designs. I was delighted when Joy got back in touch to share some images of her new designs, the geometric Metro and the chevron patterned Trad, which are being launched at the trade exhibition Home in London.
