Maybe it’s the arrival of spring here in the UK but suddenly my interest has shifted from Scandinavian cabins set against snowy backdrops (hello Four Cornered Villa) and thoughts of curling up beside a woodburning stove to, well, thoughts of summer, and warmth, and the possibilities of indoor-outdoor living.

Which is why this property simply leapt out from the screen when I spotted it listed with The Modern House. If you were to ask me what my ideal summery holiday home might look like, this would be it. Long and lean, with beautifully minimal lines and extensive glazing, and designed to offer seamless indoor-outdoor living between the interior spaces and the large decked areas. And tactile too, with a generous use of concrete played against timber – pinewood in this case. Throw in Beat Lights by Tom Dixon and I’m well and truly sold.

Casa do Pego is a simple yet luxurious house. Located metres from Pego Beach in Comporta – one of the most exclusive coastal areas in Portugal – and an hour’s journey from Lisbon, this single storey villa literally rises from the sand dunes and offers fantastic open views. The three bedroom house (which sleeps six) was designed by Pedro Ferreira Pinto and the spaces revolve around a pinewood-decked central courtyard that’s shaded by a cork oak tree.

On one side of the courtyard you’ll find the living space, which has two seating areas: one opening onto both the courtyard and the front deck, and the other featuring a flatscreen TV and media centre. The kitchen and dining area are on the other side of the courtyard, and here you’ll find a concrete kitchen kitted out with top end appliances, a casual dining area with a simple rustic table and leather-topped stools, and, yes, those Tom Dixon lights.

There are great details throughout, including the suspended fireplace in the living space and the underfloor heating that warms those concrete floors when the temperature dips. And the highlights don’t end there: look on top of the house and you’ll find a large pinewood terrace with a private heated pool. Imagine sitting here at night, watching the stars…

If this has you reaching for your sunblock and credit card, the property is available to let through The Modern House. Prices start at €2,680 per week.
