CASTLEHURST COTTAGE

24th July 2015

I’ve always been fascinated by the juxtaposition of old with new, where you’ll find a historic building with a crisp new interior or extension. I love the unapologetic combination of these elements; the honesty of adding something new that feels of its time while still being sympathetic to the existing building.

This house in the historic village of Hooe in East Sussex is a perfect example of this approach. The 17th century building – which is now on the market with The Modern House – was once the village bakery and has a tranquil setting tucked up a quiet country lane just a few miles from the East Sussex coast.

BLACKSTOCK ROAD

15th July 2015

When deciding on what to feature as my first post on the new Copperline, I knew it had to be something that jumped out the screen. Something that felt cool and desirable; a space I could live in perhaps. In my dream life that is. Which led me to this beautiful apartment on Blackstock Road in London.

HERRINGBONE HOUSE

10th April 2015

I can’t recall when I first came across Herringbone House – it might have been with this feature in Dezeen – but this building’s distinctive herringbone brickwork stopped me in my tracks when I saw it. Located on St Jude Street in Islington in London, and set within a traditional row of Victorian terraced houses, the house was designed by the team at Chan + Eayrs.

THE FRAMEHOUSE

8th April 2015

Located along Rowe Lane in London’s Hackney, The Framehouse has an impressive architectural pedigree. It is the home of architect Marcus Lee, who was formerly an associate director at Richard Rogers Partnership (now Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners) where his projects included Heathrow Terminal 5 and the Lloyd’s Buildings in London. Lee went on to establish his own practice, FLACQ, and then worked with Glenn Howells before launching LEEP – Lee Partnership – in the spring of this year.

IVY COTTAGE

25th March 2015

Crafted: that feels like the best word to describe this Grade II-listed cottage located on Ivy Lane in the centre of the historic city of Canterbury, which is being marketed by The Modern House. Last month I wrote here about a contemporary townhouse on Old Church Street in London that had been designed with a focus on craftsmanship, and while this 16th century house is very different in style and period, that same sense of craftsmanship is evident throughout.

LANGHAM HOUSE CLOSE

3rd March 2015

Back in September last year I wrote a post on my previous blog, The Property Files, about an apartment for sale at Langham House Close on Ham Common in London, and I must admit this was the first time that I’d come across this development. The apartment, since sold, was being marketed by The Modern House, so you can understand why this second apartment in the same development caught my eye. This interior feels like the perfect complement to the building: contemporary and clean-lined, but with those touches that suggest a sensitive appreciation of midcentury design.
