LANGHAM HOUSE CLOSE

3rd March 2015

Back in September last year I wrote a post on my previous blog, The Property Files, about an apartment for sale at Langham House Close on Ham Common in London, and I must admit this was the first time that I’d come across this development. The apartment, since sold, was being marketed by The Modern House, so you can understand why this second apartment in the same development caught my eye. This interior feels like the perfect complement to the building: contemporary and clean-lined, but with those touches that suggest a sensitive appreciation of midcentury design.

BRAMLEY

29th January 2015

This is definitely the time of year when I start wishing I was somewhere else. Let’s start with some place warm, like Australia. And failing that, it’s the time of year to start dreaming about new places to go and trips you’d like to make. Yes, I’m talking summer. I’m talking packing a bag (okay, several bags), jumping in the car, and going some place. This doesn’t have to be abroad. This just needs to be some place different. Continue Reading…

THE TEMPLE HOUSE

17th December 2014

Certain houses just stop me in my tracks when I’m scanning through property websites, and if you spotted the recent post on this 1960s house in Berkshire in the UK, you’ll understand why this house listed with The Modern House also caught my eye. Designed in 1966 by the architect John Penn, this single storey property is one of a celebrated group of nine Suffolk houses that are referred to as the ‘temple’ houses due to the classical symmetry of their planning, combined with the fact that the buildings are raised slightly off the ground on a platform. A NOD TO CASE STUDY LIVING

15th October 2014

The Case Study houses that were built in California between 1945 and 1966 are some of the most admired and easily recognized houses of the 20th century, and include iconic buildings such as CSH#8, the Eames House, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, and CSH#22, the equally famous Stahl House designed by Pierre Koenig. The Case Study House program was conceived by Arts & Architecture magazine as low cost, experimental modern housing, and leading architects of the time including Richard Neutra and Craig Ellwood were invited to take part. BARCELONA APARTMENT

14th October 2014

This amazing apartment caught my eye on Architectural Digest España and I had to share it. There’s so much to admire here, from the patina of those herringbone parquet floors to the overwhelming elegance of this interior, which feels almost gallery-like in the selection of artworks and mid-century furniture, including pieces by Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand, and lighting by Serge Mouille.

LANGHAM HOUSE CLOSE

24th September 2014

For all the times that I come across a great looking house, I must admit, as a city dweller, I’m always interested when I see a cleverly designed flat. I live in a flat; most people I know do the same. It’s just part of city living.

Which brings me to this apartment on Ham Common in London. As regular readers will be aware, I have a soft spot for internal brickwork. Give me a property with exposed brick walls, be it a loft or a mews, and I’m sold. So my interest was piqued from that very first image above. Throw in the mid-century classics and, well, this is my kind of interior.
