I’ve said it before and I’ll no doubt say this many times again, but some properties just grab you with one single space – that one room that connects with your taste or feels inspiring in some way. And so it was when I first opened the photos by SquareFoot of this property in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge area and saw the kitchen and dining space. I love an eclectic mix in a kitchen, and this room has so much personality and character, from the Georgian flagstone floor scattered with rugs to the entire art wall in the dining area, to the unexpected contrast of the Chinese Peony wallpaper from Sanderson against the industrial-styled black extractor.
Putting contemporary architecture aside for a moment, if I had to choose one period of architecture that I’m most drawn to it would be Georgian. Having lived in Edinburgh for just over twenty years, this is probably no surprise – I’m surrounded by Georgian architecture every day. The simplicity, the balance, the quiet elegance – this is an aesthetic that I could never tire of. I love historic buildings, but there’s just something about Georgian houses that draws me to them time and time again. Think timber panelling, simple fireplaces, delicate cornicing, flagstone floors… it doesn’t get better.
Which brings me to The New Road Residence. This has to be one of the most beautiful and restrained and sympathetically designed Georgian houses that I’ve come across, and it’s available to let with The Modern House.
When I first heard about Drylaw House, I’ll admit I wondered about the location. Looking at the exterior photo of this handsome Grade A listed house, I didn’t expect it to be located just 2 miles from Edinburgh’s city centre. It’s a house you might expect to be surrounded by open countryside. So when I went to visit a few weeks ago, I wondered whether I’d be conscious of the surrounding city. Could you live at Drylaw and have all the benefits of urban living, but yet forget about the city when you wanted to?
And yes, I discovered, as soon as you approach up the long tree-lined driveway, you forget that this is Edinburgh. You forget that Drylaw House sits within a residential area. You forget the traffic passing by outside the three acres of grounds that enclose the house. By the time you pull up in the driveway, you could be anywhere. And this is just the first of many surprises.
Many years ago, too many years to acknowledge here, I moved into a rental flatshare in Nelson Street in Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town. It was a great flat – beautiful in its proportions and period detail, albeit with a tired interior, but at that stage in life I didn’t mind having a dated kitchen with tiling that looked like it might have been there since the ’70s. The big rooms and brilliant location won me over, and this street has been a favourite New Town address of mine ever since.
So when I noticed this main door ground floor flat in Nelson Street being marketed by Knight Frank, needless to say I had to explore it further. “Magnolia, magnolia and more magnolia” is how owners Andrew and Anna Martin describe this three bedroom property when they bought it in May 2014. “The previous owners had re-decorated to sell,” Andrew explains. “It had been a HMO (multiple occupancy let) in recent years, but we loved the neoclassical proportions and the size of the flat, which was obvious as soon as we entered for the first time.”
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a ‘Property’ story here. If you’ve been following Copperline for a while you’ll know that the posts here are design led, whether it’s a house or flat that’s for sale or simply an amazing piece of architecture or a great interior. Turn the clock back a few years, however, when I had a blog called The Property Files, and I did feature properties. They didn’t have to be design led. Instead I was looking for interesting houses; maybe a property that needed refurbishment, but something that stood out as a great opportunity for a buyer.
Which is why this late Georgian house in Edinburgh’s Morningside area caught my eye when I spotted it being marketed by Strutt & Parker. Maybe it’s time to return to the occasional property feature? And 14 Jordan Lane feels like the perfect place to start.
A few weeks ago I posted about an amazing flat in Edinburgh’s New Town, and I must admit that when I turned up to chat to the owner there and have a look round, I knew that this was a flat I could (very happily!) live in. There are just some places that you immediately connect with. And this happened again when I went to meet Stuart Holligan at this B listed Georgian flat on Broughton Place, again in the city’s New Town. I know this location well and have admired these bow-ended flats that sit on the corner of Broughton Place and Broughton Street, and also opposite on the corner of Barony Street and Broughton Street, for years. Needless to say, perhaps, it was a pleasure to finally see inside one.
