CURIOUS EGG

2nd February 2017

You know when you happen across a website, start browsing, and half an hour later you’re still there, hooked, clicking through categories and making mental lists of things you’d like? Curious Egg is one of those sites as this online store is literally filled with unique objects from accessories, textiles and lighting to (incredible!) wallpapers and artworks.

Curious Egg was launched in 2015 by artist Lorraine Aaron and her husband Roddy, who live in Perth in Scotland – I have to admit this Scottish connection also caught my eye. Lorraine has worked as a sculptor, painter, public artist and gallery artist, and has also taught contemporary arts practice and run a successful art consultancy business. Intrigued by how this experience led her to launch Curious Egg and informs her selection of pieces and artists, designers and craftspeople, I caught up with Lorraine to ask about her background and her business.

JENNI DOUGLAS

22nd November 2016

I was recently introduced to the work of printmaker and pattern designer Jenni Douglas and, unsurprisingly, given that I’ve lived in or near Edinburgh for most of my life, I was immediately drawn to her collection of Edinburgh prints and linocuts. Jenni launched her business, Jenni Douglas Designs, in 2012, and her collections have expanded to incorporate animals and birds – I love her Woodpigeon Pair Print with its mustard, teal and grey combo – and woodland themes.

There’s also an extensive abstract pattern collection that includes shapes and forms inspired by nature – the Hillwalks Block Print is beautifully bold and graphic – along with midcentury references. As well as prints, Jenni also features her prints on a range of homewares including cushions and lampshades.

ROME APARTMENT

25th October 2016

Do you ever see a photo that keeps cropping up on Pinterest or Tumblr, but you don’t know where it’s from? That was the case with the photo with the geometric shelving below, an image that I kept seeing, but never in context until I came across this apartment in Rome, which was designed in 2014 by Quincoces Dragò & Partners.

This has to be one of the most elegant interiors I’ve come across of late. The design scheme highlights the original features, including the arched windows and the herringbone parquet flooring, while creating a retrained backdrop that offsets the beautifully chosen range of furnishings, including design classics by Charlotte Perriand, Vico Magistretti, and Flavio de Carvalho – Carvalho’s FDC1 Armchairs, designed in the 1950s, feature in the living space below.

THE STASIS COLLECTION

20th September 2016

If, like me, you’re a fan of midcentury design, and also happen to have something of a lighting obsession, then chances are that you’ve already come across the British-based lighting company Bert Frank. There are so many reasons why I admire this company, starting with their absolutely beautiful lights, of course.

But it’s more than that. Bert Frank lights are designed and manufactured to last. These designs have a timeless quality – although very contemporary and of-the-moment, you also know that these pieces will look just as right and just as desirable years down the line.

ANNA GLOVER FOR SOFA.COM

18th August 2016

Earlier this year I started writing the Interior News page for Scotland on Sunday, and, in a sense, looking for great products to showcase every week has been the catalyst for thinking about this new SPOTLIGHT category for the blog. Some posts will be more in-depth features, some will be Q&As with designers, and some will be shorter posts like this where I’m simply saying, look at this fantastic product range!

Which brings me to Design Lab – a bi-annual collaboration between Sofa.com and British textile designers to create fabrics that will work beautifully on Sofa.com’s furniture range. This Design Lab collection was created with the award-winning designer Anna Glover, who won in the ‘Best use of print and pattern‘ category in the ELLE Decoration British Design Awards last year. Taking inspiration from Japanese wood block printing and Indian miniature printing, Anna was described by ELLE Decoration as having a “masterful approach to form, scale and colour.”
